Weir Fishing

Photograph

This is a traditional fishery that goes back to the ancient Passamaquoddy Tribe. Poles, brush, and nets are used to create a trap that catches herring. Fishing requires quiet nights, careful tending, and ready access. This fishery has been the foundation of the Connors Bros plant in Black's Harbour, the world's largest producer of sardines. Passage of LNG tankers, LNG tanker lights, and terminal lights will clearly negatively impact this vital fishery.
